Self-awareness is key to making sound decisions, especially in a management or leadership role. Practicing self-awareness involves understanding and managing your own emotions, being aware of your own biases and tendencies, and recognizing how they affect your decisions.
To practice self-awareness when making decisions, I start by taking a step back and reflecting on the situation. I ask myself questions such as: What emotions am I feeling in this moment? How could my emotions be influencing my decision? What biases am I bringing to this situation? How could my biases be impacting my decision?
I then take the time to consider all possible angles and outcomes of the decision before I make it. I consider how the decision could affect me, my team, my organization, and even people outside of my organization. I use this information to help me make a more informed decision.
Finally, I often check in with my team or another trusted mentor to get their perspective. This helps me identify any blind spots I may have and allows me to make a more unbiased decision. By taking the time to practice self-awareness when making decisions, I'm better able to make decisions that are both informed and considered.
