During busy periods, such as tax season, I prioritize my tasks by using a combination of deadlines, project complexity, and client needs. First, I create a master list of all tasks that need to be completed, categorized by client or project. I then assess the deadlines; tasks with the earliest due dates are given the highest priority.
I also evaluate the complexity of the tasks—some tasks, like filing returns for clients with straightforward financials, can be completed relatively quickly, while others, such as handling more intricate tax situations or audits, may require more time and attention. For instance, if I have a client with a complex situation that has a due date coming up soon, I will prioritize their work first.
Additionally, I maintain constant communication with my clients and my team. If I notice that certain tasks can be delegated or if I require assistance, I reach out to team members to ensure all efforts are aligned towards meeting critical deadlines. For example, during the last tax season, I had multiple clients with similar deadlines. I grouped them by priority and delegated preliminary data collection to junior staff, allowing us to efficiently prepare and file returns on time.
By remaining organized, communicating effectively, and being adaptable to shifting priorities, I ensure that I can manage my workload efficiently during the busy season.
