Can you describe your experience with establishing co-governance mechanisms within protected areas?

In my experience, co-governance is about creating shared decision-making platforms between government, communities, and other stakeholders to manage natural resources sustainably. While I haven’t formally established a full co-governance structure from scratch, I have contributed to processes that reflect co-governance principles.

For example, during my work with SANBI and SANParks, I was involved in community engagement and environmental education initiatives where we worked closely with local communities, young people, and conservation stakeholders. My role included facilitating discussions, ensuring community voices were included, and supporting collaborative decision-making around conservation activities.

Currently, in my work with OSCA-related applications, I engage with landowners, planners, and environmental specialists to ensure that land-use decisions consider both ecological sensitivity and stakeholder needs. This involves advising, facilitating discussions, and ensuring compliance while also balancing different interests.
