During my final year at university, I was balancing a demanding academic schedule whilst working part-time at JFPR consulting and tutoring students in the evening. There was a period where two major deadlines overlapped - a legal research paper for university and a client report for JFPR.

The first thing I did was map out all the key deliverables and break them down into smaller daily tasks. For the client report I set an earlier internal deadline to give time for feedback from my manager, and for my university report, I started drafting earlier than usual and scheduled in time for edits.

I also made sure to communicate. I kept my manager up-to-date and where I needed flexibility I flagged it early on. In the end, both tasks were delivered on time and to a high standard and it reinforced a project management style I've used ever since - plan early, communicate early and stay flexible without dropping standards.
