Job Title: Senior Accountant Location: Washington, DC Job Type: Direct Hire Compensation: $70-90k (dependent on experience) Office Schedule: Hybrid Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and PTO About the Organization Our client is a nationally recognized public policy research and educational organization.
Based in Washington, DC, the organization plays a significant role in shaping policy discussions at the federal and state levels.
Position Summary The Senior Accountant will play a key role in supporting the organization’s financial operations by overseeing general ledger activity, managing month-end close processes, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and assisting with financial reporting.
This individual must have experience working within both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and understand the regulatory, reporting, and fund accounting distinctions between the two entities.
The role will work cross-functionally with internal departments to ensure financial integrity, transparency, and accuracy in support of the organization’s mission.
Key Responsibilities Manage full-cycle month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, intercompany activity, and allocations between entities Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules; analyze variances and provide explanations to leadership Ensure proper accounting treatment and compliance for both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, including intercompany transactions and cost allocations Assist in grant accounting, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds, monitoring compliance, and preparing required reporting Support annual audit processes and assist with Form 990 preparation for multiple entities Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB ASC 958) Oversee fixed asset accounting and depreciation schedules Monitor internal controls and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy Support budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department leaders Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred) 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or public accounting environment Required: Experience working with both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards Experience with fund accounting, entity allocations, and intercompany reconciliations Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, financial analysis) Strong analytical skills and attention to detail Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Preferred Experience Experience preparing or supporting multiple Form 990 filings Experience with NetSuite ERP Experience using Concur for expense management and reporting Background in policy organizations, think tanks, or advocacy nonprofits Prior audit coordination experience Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary commensurate with experience Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage 401(k) with employer contribution Generous paid time off and federal holidays Professional development opportunities Why choose Addison Finance & Accounting?
